Although it can be a chronic condition that could prove to be a serious health issue, a little insight into some simple bad habits could help freshen a rotten smelling mouth! There are certain medical conditions that should be discussed with a doctor first, but little things such as diets, habits and foods can strongly contribute to bad breath. And knowing what you can do personally at home can be very helpful!

The Diet

There is a saying “You become what you eat”. In the case of bad breath, it true. Certian foods such as parsley, lettuce and other fresh foods can freshen the breath. Eating foods that aren’t properly cooked, or even cleaned can cause bad breath. So in general, it’s best to watch what kind of foods you eat.

Your Habits

Setting up a regular daily routine of brushing and flossing can really help prevent bad breath. Food particles can stick to the teeth, gums, and tongue. So if left unbrushed, the warm and wet environment of the mouth can speed up the rotting process of these foods stuck in the mouth. Rotting foods cause odors. So getting rid of the cause of the stink by brushing and flossing will prevent foods from rotting in the mouth! So, setting up that daily routine can really help make your breath as fresh and clean as possible!

One only has to glance at the television or a magazine to see just how wonderfully grooomed we must strive to be. Our hair must be styled just so, and skin must be cleaned, polished and moisturised. However considering how much care people take with their bodies they often neglect their teeth. The range of products available now is staggering, yet tooth decay is still on the increase.

Our experiences as children at the hands of the dentist often reflect how we care for our teeth in the future. I can remember the awful taste of the fluoride treatments my parents made me have. I always had regular check-ups, yet still my teeth have succumbed to decay. This is not because I looked after teeth as a child, but the fact that this care lapsed in later life. An addiction to anything sweet did not help either.

The main cause of tooth decay is bacteria. Bacteria in our mouth is caused by the food we eat, and if we do not brush our teeth regularly after food, then bacteria forms. There are many chemicals formed from the bacterial action in our mouths. There are around five hundred different chemicals formed and the most damaging one is acid. If this problem is not controlled then this can lead to cavities and in turn decay.

The name of this harmful bacteria is “Streptococcus Mutans”. The occurrence of decay does not happen overnight, it can take quite a long time as the outside layer of the tooth (enamel) is hard while the inside is soft. It can take years for the bacteria to attack and wear away the enamel, once this has happened the centre of the tooth is attacked and because of it’s texture succumbs to decay a lot quicker.

The tiny space between teeth is where the first signs of decay are usually found. This can be easily treated by using the most effective method around - flossing. It is vital that we still brush our teeth but must follow this with flossing. This has been proved to be the best way clean inbetween teeth thoroughly.

Mouthwash is also an essential part of good dental hygiene. It has an anti-bacterial action as well as freshening breath. The anti-bacterial action fights the bacteria left in the mouth after brushing and flossing, further reducing the chances of decay. Some people do not like the taste of mouthwash but there is such a large choice that there is something to suit everyone’s taste.

It is really easy to prevent tooth decay. There is no cast iron guarantee, but surely prevention is better than the treatment. One common reason for tooth decay is not paying special attention to brushing and flossing. Smoking is also a contributor, so do not smoke tobacco. The most common cause is sugar. An excess of fluoride is also a known contributor, not only is fluoride found in dental products but is also added to most water supplies.

If we look after our teeth, visit our dentist regularly, and take heed of his advice, then the chances of decay are greatly reduced. A good oral hygiene routine is essential in eliminating cavities, extractions and pain.

Cavities can appear in teeth in as little as six months, if proper care is not taken of them, or take as long as six years to appear, if more care is taken. The tooth enamel (outer layer of tooth) is hard, whilst the inner tooth is softer. Because the enamel is hard it can take a lot longer for decay to occur but once it does the softer centre of the tooth is exposed and is destroyed a lot quicker.

Brushing is not the only form of defence in fighting tooth decay, flossing is very important too and should be part of a daily routine. Because the the spaces between teeth are very narrow, food becomes easily trapped, and hence bacteria forms. This area is where cavities are most common, and the correct manner of removing foods from here is flossing.

Today there is no need to take fluoride supplements as this is already introduced into our drinking water supply. Last but not least, avoid smoking. Not only does tobacco stain the teeth it can also increase the chances of tooth decay.

Having a poor dental hygiene routine is what eventually leads to decay and bad breath. If we all learnt how to look after our teeth properly, and followed the advice of our dentists, then we would not need to visit him so often for unpleasant treatments.

Who would have thought there would ever be a problem with bad breath in toddlers? But unfortunately some parents have noticed that children seem to have a problem in this area well before they’re ready to start brushing their teeth, and definitely before it’s safe for them to use mouthwash of any sort.

So if that is the case, what can parents do when they notice bad breath in toddlers in their own family? Are there any products that are safe to use? Before we answer those questions, it is important for us to first determine the cause of their foul breath and what we should look out for.

The consideration of the safety and health of a child is essential when you are thinking about bad breath problems in toddlers. You won’t want to give child products which aren’t suitable for them. These products include mouthwashes, rinses, and other similar items.
